Health and Safety Services

The Division of Environmental Safety and Emergency Management (ESEM) offers the following occupational safety & health services. Please call Environmental Safety and Emergency Management at 387-5590 to obtain the following services or questions about the services:

Ergonomic Work Methods Analysis

The purpose of an ergonomic analysis is to reduce the number and severity of work related musculoskeletal disorders by analyzing and recommending positive changes in work environment and methods.  ESEM staff will come to your worksite to review the tools of your job and how you use them.  The job could range from using a computer workstation to slicing carrots.

Respirator Fit Testing

MIOSHA requires that employers provide the appropriate respirator training and fit testing on an annual basis to employees that wear respirators on the job.  Respirators come in many sizes and offer different types of protection.  The purpose of the initial and annual Respiratory Protection classes and respirator fit testing is to assure a proper fit as well as the selection of the correct respirator and type of filter or cartridge for the work conditions.  Please refer to the Respirator Policy for more details.

Building Safety Inspections

ESEM will perform annual inspections of public areas in all buildings on campus.  Occupants of buildings are encouraged to inspect their own work areas and eliminate hazards or report hazardous conditions for repair.  Some items to evaluate are the following:

  • Are walkways free of obstructions and tripping hazards: storage, oil, water?
  • Are all handrails and treads secure on stairways?
  • Are outlet boxes and junction box covers in place?
  • Are exit doors, corridors, and stairways unobstructed and free of storage?
  • Are doors in stairwell enclosures kept closed?
  • Are fire extinguishers visible and unobstructed?
  • Are fire extinguishers charged and tagged last inspection date?
  • Are circuit breaker boxes locked?
  • Are eyewashes and emergency showers obstruction free?
  • Are doors to storage, electrical, and mechanical doors locked?
  • Are all power strips plugged directly into a wall outlet (no daisy chaining?
  • Is all storage lower than 18 inches on a horizontal plane from the sprinkler heads?
